Genesis:
I’m dinosaur enough to remember, as a child in the 50s, when we were subjected to “bomb drills” and our then-panicked populace were digging bomb shelters in our backyards.. Our next-door neighbor, a lovely woman (mother of my best friend), informed us, so sadly, that we needed to build one as well, because “Unfortunately, we’re having to keep our guns in the shelter, as we’re going to have to keep the neighbors out.” I remember thinking that I didn’t want to live in such a world. And I still don’t. (I’m not anti-gun.. just don’t want to see them used against neighbors 😉
Intention:
Everyone on our beloved, beleaguered planet, it seems, has been through a great, heart-breaking dissolution of community and family, especially since 2020, and Neighborhood Readiness Project is hoping to help settle the very real zeitgeist of anxiety in our home towns and neighborhoods through some basic food security. It seems that we’re all hungry for the village, and to reclaim our human connections, beyond left & right, right & wrong, and up & down. Hopefully, in preparing to care for our neighbors, we can begin the process of learning to listen beyond our conditioned comfort zones. In future, if the supply trucks aren’t rolling, we’ll be able to take care of our neighbors for a few transitional months. Nevada County will stand as a ready model for preparedness, stored-food wealth, and generosity-of-spirit. (Neighborhood block parties rather than Mad Max 😉
